The MEDEA-CHART Database is an online free-of-charge information system dedicated to old nautical charts, created under the European Research Council project MEDEA-CHART. The system holds digital images and information about medieval and early modern nautical charts and atlases from circa 1250 onwards. Content is managed by project members.
The MEDEA-CHART database is an online free-of-charge information system of old nautical charts created under the European Research Council project MEDEA-CHART, and hosted by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. The system contains digital images and information about medieval and early modern nautical charts from about the year 1250 onwards, as well as about their authors and archival status.
Because the graphic content of old charts is now in the public domain, users are welcome to download and use most of the images provided. Whenever possible, links to the entries and high-resolution digital copies made available by some museums and libraries are likewise offered.
The information contained in the database is presented in two forms:
One of the system’s unique and powerful features is the capacity to store and display the geographical coverage of charts and atlases, using Google Maps for visualization. Under the title Geo Search, on the left bar, an intuitive and easy-to-use tool is provided to make geographical searches on the database and apply various filters to the results. This permits, for example, the identification of all charts of a certain period that were produced in a certain country and depict a specific region indicated by the user.
We welcome users to suggest corrections to the information stored in the database and improvements to its tools, as well as to contact the MEDEA-CHART team to discuss any research relevant to the study of old charts.
Database entries created with the help of ‘Census of Portolan Charts and Atlases’, Richard Pflederer; originally published in 2009 as a hard bound book with frequent digital updates since then.
